The Philosophy Club is on the move! Join us this Saturday, October 5th @ 4pm as we explore one of San Jose's most interesting attractions: The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum [http://www.egyptianmuseum.org/].
You might be asking yourself: What is The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and why would the Philosophy Club go there? Those are great questions!
The Museum has several ongoing exhibits of philosophical interest including exhibits on Egyptian culture, gods and goddesses, and the afterlife. The Museum itself is operated under the auspices of The Ancient and Mystical Order of Rosae Crucis, a worldwide philosophical and humanistic organization devoted to "the study of the elusive mysteries of life and the universe" [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosicrucian_Order]
The Philosophy Club wants YOU to join us for an interesting tour of this nearby (and metaphysically fascinating) museum. We plan to meet at the entrance gate at 4pm and have a discussion (and dinner!) afterwards. Possible topics include: the significance and understanding of history, the science/pseudoscience distinction, whether the afterlife is metaphysically possible, and possibly even the epistemology of 'elusive mysteries of life and the universe.'
You won't regret joining us! The museum is located near the SCU campus at the following address
1660 Park Avenue
San Jose CA 95191
RSVPs are appreciated. Please feel free to e-mail the Philosophy Club faculty advisers with any questions:
Erick Ramirez <ejramirez AT scu.edu>
Justin Remhof <jremhof AT scu.edu>

What up, dearest SCU Philosophy clubbies,
& welcome back for spring quarter!
The first meet-up of spring quarter for the SCU Philosophy Club is next Saturday, the 12th, & I am so anxious for what I predict will be a philosophically tremendous viewing & discussion of Wes Anderson's 2014 film,
~* The Grand Budapest Hotel *~(Feast upon the official trailer: http://youtu.be/2bTbW70umbQ)
Whether you've already seen GBH or are still longing to, this is your opportunity to join our campus community of thinkers for a session of deep Anderson-ian catharsis!
Our discussion will aspire to unpack the emotional & intellectual intricacy of this aesthetically wow-some & morally provocative film, which compels us to consider ourselves as frail mortals at the mercy of history, & reminds us of the ways we transcend our mortal, historical circumstances.
ALSO, at this meeting: we'll announce dates for upcoming club activities this quarter, including our major end of the year SCU Philosophy Club excursion!

Date: Sat, April 12th
Meet-up time: 2:30 pm
Meet-up location: Kenna
RSVP: [email protected]
*
(Need a ride? We'll get you covered!)
Hearkening back to our club expedition to see Her (it's nearly the end of the academic year, let's get nostalgic), we'll be viewing GBH @ Camera 12 theaters in downtown San Jose & afterwards taking our discussion to Philz coffee shop! (Specifics to follow later in the week.)
RSVP with me ([email protected]) or on Facebook(http://www.facebook.com/groups/scuphilosophyclub) in order to receive forthcoming details regarding our club expedition, & I'll see you next Saturday for what promises to be an emotionally, intellectually staggering movie/club experience!

The SCU Philosophy Club has a one track mind. Whether it be one scoop or two, ice-cream poses several interesting philosophical questions:
Is sweetness best described as a dispositional property? Peter Railton thinks so.
Are ice-cream, sherbet, and sorbet distinct concepts? Eleanor Rosch might disagree.
The Philosophy Club is convinced that the answers to these and other enduring questions will be discovered at the bottom of a bowl of ice-cream.
JOIN US for an Ice-Cream Social THIS SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7th @ 7:00pm!!
The meeting will take place INSIDE the Philosophy Department (Kenna 200) in our computer lounge. Be there or live in one of those sad possible worlds where you do not eat ice-cream!

The Philosophy Club is on the move!
We plan to meet at the Santa Cruz Mystery Spot on Saturday November 16th. The Mystery Spot bills itself as "a gravitational anomaly located in the redwood forests just outside of Santa Cruz, California." The Philosophy Club is interested in all things anomalous.
JOIN US as we have weird experiences, a very 'Santa Cruz' style dinner, and discuss the nature of evidence and perception, folk theory, and what it's like to be a philosopher.
Admission to the Mystery Spot is $6 online (buy them HERE) along with a $5 per car parking charge. The Spot itself, when it happens to be located physically in our universe, can be found at:
465 Mystery Spot Road
Santa Cruz, CA 95065

Hello Truth Seeker,
The Philosophy Club is on the move! This Saturday, Oct. 19th, we will storm the San Jose Museum of Art. The museum has a fantastic permanent collection and some radical current exhibitions, including a work on the relation between food, creativity, and community, a piece on how we use words to understand and construct reality, and works by artists who have used stories from the Odyssey and ancient Greek myths to address challenging issues such as race, culture, and the psychological effects of war, or as a vehicle to explore desire and the universal subconscious. It will be an event not to miss!
The museum will give us plenty of philosophical material to discuss, including, perhaps, Arthur Danto’s interesting thesis that art has “come to an end” because in the post-modern world there are simply no constraints on what makes something a true work of art.
We will meet at 2:50 in front of the museum, which is located at 110 S Market St in San Jose. It's 5 bucks for students. After the museum we will grab some food nearby and discuss the universe.
Please RSVP to Justin (jremhof AT scu.edu) or Erick (ejramirez AT scu.edu) if you plan to attend. All majors and minors are encouraged to come hang with us – and bring a friend! If you need a ride please let us know in your RSVP.
The museum website is here: http://www.sjmusart.org/
